Blackwork embroidery on your knitwear

Blackwork embroidery (black sewing) is a fascinating technique traditionally used to fill shapes with geometric patterns. The technique follows a precise stitch sequence -- not difficult, but important to adhere to -- to achieve a clean and neat back.

On woven fabric, the technique is usually performed by counting threads to obtain an even and symmetrical design. On knitwear, however, transfer paper makes the whole thing much simpler and far more fun! At first glance, it may look intricate, but in fact it is very reminiscent of cross stitch. Most people find that it is easy to understand and very satisfying once you get started.

**Participants must bring: **

• Embroidery yarn or crewel embroidery yarn — an obvious option to use something from your stock
• The knitted sample (see homework)
• Embroidery needles for wool (pointed needle, large eye, adapted to your yarn — do not use a stopper needle)
• Embroidery ring (must be smaller than the sample)
• Small scissors
• Black fine felt-tip pen to draw the embroidery
• Water-soluble transfer paper (also available as self-adhesive stabilizer)
• Notebook and ballpoint pen or pencil for notes

**Homework before workshop: **

Before the course, please knit a square sample in stockinette stitch with DK-thickness yarn. The square should measure about 22 cm on each side. Be sure to knit it to the correct size, as it should be able to be tightened into an embroidery ring and should be slightly larger than the circumference of the ring. I recommend bringing an embroidery ring of 20 cm. Remember to iron the sample, as this will make the embroidery work easier.

**About the Educator: **

Dario is an Italian designer currently residing in Japan. Among other things, he graduated in Creative Knitwear Design from the Accademia di Costume e Moda in Rome. In addition to designing knitted prints in his own name, Dario has also worked as a designer for several major brands such as United Colors of Benetton and Esprit. Since 2021, he has taught several times for Vogue Knitting Live in New York.
