The art of embroidering chain stitch on your knitwear

Chain stitch is one of the oldest and most versatile embroidery, but once you start exploring its variations — such as the loose chain stitch — endless creative possibilities open up.

In this workshop, we will discover how simple changes in rhythm, direction or combination can create a surprising variety of expressions, from fine textures to striking, graphic patterns. You'll learn how to use chain-based stitches to add stripes, decorative details or eye-catching accents that elevate your knitwear from simple to sophisticated.

We will focus on how to control thickness, spacing and flow so that the stitches complement the fabric rather than overwhelm it. By the end of the course you will have a handy library of variations of chain stitch as well as the confidence to use them in your own creative way.

**Participants must bring: **

• DK-thickness yarn — an obvious option to use something from your yarn stock
• The knitted sample (see homework)
• Embroidery needles for wool (pointed needle, large eye, adapted to your yarn — do not use a stopper needle)
• Embroidery ring (must be smaller than the sample)
• Small scissors
• Black fine felt-tip pen to draw the embroidery
• Water-soluble transfer paper (also available as self-adhesive stabilizer)
• Notebook and ballpoint pen or pencil for notes

**Homework before workshop: **

Before the course, please knit a square sample in stockinette stitch with DK-thickness yarn. The square should measure about 22 cm on each side. Be sure to knit it to the correct size, as it should be able to be tightened into an embroidery ring and should be slightly larger than the circumference of the ring. I recommend bringing an embroidery ring of 20 cm. Remember to iron the sample, as this will make the embroidery work easier.

**About the Educator: **

Dario is an Italian designer currently residing in Japan. Among other things, he graduated in Creative Knitwear Design from the Accademia di Costume e Moda in Rome. In addition to designing knitted prints in his own name, Dario has also worked as a designer for several major brands such as United Colors of Benetton and Esprit. Since 2021, he has taught several times for Vogue Knitting Live in New York.
