Knitting is good for people living with mental illness. This is confirmed by a study from the University of Gothenburg, in which needlework is described as an opportunity to find calm and create structure in everyday life. The current study reinforces the picture from other research showing that knitting is an activity that can improve both health and quality of life.

The study examines how people living with mental illness themselves describe what knitting means for their health. It happens in an internet forum where they discuss their hobby with others who knit. The results show three clear clues to how knitting can support better health. Needlework is perceived as an opportunity to relax in everyday life. The hobby of knitting also provides an identity as a knitter and a social community without great demands. In addition, the activity can create a structure in everyday life that makes the person feel comfortable.

In general, these individuals saw their knitting as a very valuable occupation, promoting health both in the short and long term.
