Chicken knitting — lecture and workshop

This is an exciting and different workshop, where I alternate between practical teaching and stories about the women's rebellion of the 70s and the origins of chicken knitting. If you are curious to know more about chicken knitting and this colourful part of our common cultural heritage, come and learn more about the techniques, the political messages and the history behind it.

What is Chicken Knit?
Deeply rooted in the 1970s women's movement, hen knitting emerged as a countermove to the rigid knitting patterns and dictates of the yarn industry. It's about freedom and imagination in colors and patterns told in masks. The many iconic charts are used to tell personal stories, or signal attitudes and messages into the knitwear.

Chicken knitting broke with the traditional norms of how knitwear “should” look, and instead gave the knitter full artistic freedom. The knitting style pays homage to the imperfect and the personal.

You'll get that at the workshop:
At the workshop, you will be given a pattern for a small project and a small booklet with a selection of classic and fun diagrams that you can use to design your very own Hen Knit expression.

**Participants must bring: **

· Wool yarn, corresponding to p 3,5 — 4 mm. in a minimum of two colors. Approximately 50 g /150-175 g of each.
· Knitting needles of a suitable selection. You can very advantageously apply the Magic Loop technique (remember a long wire. Preferably 80/100 cm) .
· Scissors
· Mask markers
· Pencil
